Ingredients
  

Dough Ingredients

  • 1.75 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon instant dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 0.33 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 cups warm water
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 1 tablespoon canola oil

Instructions
 

Making the Dough

  • In a large bowl, combine the instant dry yeast, sugar, salt, and flour.
  • Mix together the warm water, milk, and oil, and add to the flour mixture.
  • Knead for 5 minutes until a smooth dough forms.
  • Cover and leave to rise for 1 hour in a warm place.

Filling and Cooking the Custard Buns

  • After the dough has risen, punch it down and knead for 3 minutes.
  • Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and roll each into a circle.
  • Place a teaspoon of cooled custard on half of each circle and fold the other half over.
  • Press and seal the edges, then let rest for 15 minutes.
  • Heat a non-stick pan on low and place the custard buns inside.
  • Cook for 10 minutes, flip, and cook the other side for 5 minutes.
  • Remove from the pan and cool before serving, dust with powdered sugar if desired.

Notes

You can use homemade custard powder, store-bought custard powder, or your favorite egg-based custard recipe as a filling.
